“Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.” – Carl Jung
Awareness is the core of meditation.
Discover yourself.
Allow yourself to feel Self-AWARENESS
EVERYTHING.
One of my favorite lessons I’ve learned from Brene Brown, a research professor who focuses widely on studying shame and vulnerability, is that when it comes to our emotions we need to feel all of them, and when we try to numb the bad ones, we consequently numb the good ones.
Being self-aware encourages us to examine our personal emotions and the physical reactions we have to both good and bad feelings.
The brain is powerful and through meditation, we can quiet the mind and start to realize that a bad mood, a stressful day, grief, anxiety, etc, do not control us and that if we stop, slow down, and breathe through it, we can get over those humps quicker.
We can also lessen the occurrence of negative emotions by being proactive and starting our day with a few moments of silence where we express gratitude, pray, and simply be in the moment. The practice of being aware gives us control, peace, and calm. It sets the trajectory for our day and can be life changing. I know it has changed mine.
Here’s a great article digging a little deeper, giving an example of a person in a leadership role who is not self-aware, and containing a sample guided meditation: https://www.mindful.org/emotionally-self-aware/
